Software

LHCSynth <screendump>

This software has been developed as part of an LHCsound 6-month outreach project funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council. It has been designed to facilitate the sonification of collision and related data from the ATLAS detector of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. It can in principle be used with any numeric data in a text file formatted as columns separated by spaces. It is at a very early prototype stage of development and may change in as yet unanticipated ways (including being completely rewritten). However, it is functionally complete enough to enable a range of more or less simple sonifications to be created quickly and easily, and for settings used for one sonification to be imported for use with a new compatible data file, so that data files can be compared.

This program takes a data file as input, and generates a Csound .csd file which in turn is used to create a soundfile.

Data Files

• Jet Game (3 columns) : see the LHCsound Jet archive. The challenge of the "jet game" was to distinguish three types of particle jet, containing either a Higgs Boson, a Top Quark, or background ("other"). The file "INDEX_FILE.TXT" is the crib sheet, identifying which is which. Scroll to the bottom of the page to download the full archive in the file "jetgame_v2.tgz". The first column gives distance from the collision point, so is ordered as ascending values, and is therefore an appropriate source of timing information.
• Collision events (5 Columns, 10,000 events): download archive here. These are lists of (unordered) individual events (one event per line). See the included documentation for explanations. There is one file of real data.
